Columbia County

History

Kinderhook is one of the oldest place names in New York, dating from Henry Hudson's 1609 exploration of the river named for him. He saw some Indian children playing at a hook in the river and gave it this place name. The Dutch settled what is now Kinderhook village in the 1660s and it has remained the loveliest early village in the Hudson Valley. Today it is noted for its history and many historic houses. The central part of the village is on the National Register of Historic Places

Visit the Columbia County Historical Society's museums of county history and art, the Society's James Vanderpoel House, a distinguished Federal home of 1820, and the Luykas Van Alen house, an important early brick Dutch house (1737).  Nearby is the home of President Martin Van Buren, a National Historic Site. A number of the other historic houses in the village are seen from the street and are on house tours now and then.
